You might be confused why some Jewish celebrations would be on a Christian charity’s website? Let alone our teaching curriculum! Well, the Shabbat day or rest and the Passover celebration are talked about in the Bible. Both the Jewish people and Christians read the first 5 books of the Bible. Both of these events can be found in the book of Exodus.

Shabbat is the Jewish day of rest, it was commanded by God in the 10 commandments. This day is celebrated with various traditions.

In our 1 hour lesson, children have the opportunity to reflect on why this day of rest is celebrated. There is traditional food brought in, such as the challah bread, that children are allowed to try. A traditional meal is acted out so children can understand what it would be like to celebrate this day for some Jewish familie

Passover is a time where Jewish people remember the story from a long time ago. It is the story of the Jewish people who lived in Egypt and worked as slaves, and how God brought them out of Egypt. This story is written about in the book of Exodus, both of which are included in the Bible and the Torah.

In this one hour lesson, pupils can reflect on why Jewish people celebrate this meal.

A Seder Plate with the traditional foods can be tasted as the children experience the key parts of a Passover Seder Meal. The different foods on the plate help to tell the different stages of the Passover story.

This lesson can be adapted to most year groups, it has been carried out both in KS1 and KS2 before.
